Please Meet Our Volunteers: Mike & Paula

Mike and Paula are an amazing volunteer couple. One of Mike's hobbies is woodworking. Paula was an art teacher and loves all things artistic, especially painting. They came to Wooden It Be Lovely after reading about the ministry in the Springfield’s Own (SO) Magazine. Mike says that when he was reading the article, he immediately said to Paula, “they need us, I bet they are getting furniture that needs a bit of repair.  I can help them with my woodworking gifts and you can help them paint”. Mike and Paula have been volunteering once a week for several months and have added to the ministry in so many way. The Associates just love them and have learned so much from them. Paula says, “I have been blessed in my life and I believe giving back to the community is my way of glorifying God.”

When Christina got her first paycheck she said, "Oh my, I can finally buy gas and deodorant".

Christina is a neighbor of Douglas Avenue UMC and has been an Associate at WIBL for about 3 months. She came to WIBL after hearing about our program from a social worker at her children’s school. Christina was working full time at a local restaurant until she was in a tragic accident that left her in the hospital 4 months and in a nursing home for 2 months. She has been having a difficult time healing form this injury.  All the time spent rehabilitating has put a tremendous strain on her financial and personal situation. Christina says that she was so depressed before this opportunity. At WIBL she feels a part of something and painting is "therapeutic" for her. She hopes to be healthy enough to go to work full time in the future. Until her healing is complete, she is able to work gently at her own pace at WIBL and make a small income to help provide for her children. When Christina got her first paycheck she said, "Oh my, I can finally buy gas and deodorant".
